Here is a little bit of history of each March Madness 2021 site. A little bit of reading for your Sunday Night of social distancing and will do a post for the regional and Final Four sites next weekend. hopefully it will bring some memories from these past games at reach site
Providence: Last Tourney Appearance- 2016. March Madness has visited the Dunk 11 times before 2021. Providence is the most visited site in New England.
Best Game at the Dunkin Donuts Center: 2010 Round of 32- fairly new to the major college basketball scene. Now common tourney attendee St. Mary’s beat 2 seed Villanova to get to the sweet sixteen.
Detroit: Last Tourney Appearance- 2018. One of the less visited city on this list. The Motor City has been part of the madness 3 times. With Ford Field hosting 1 regional and 1 final four. Little Caesars Arena hosted in 2018 and 2021 will be the 2nd trip.
Best Game at Little Caesars Arena: 2018 Round of 32. 11 seed Syracuse goes on one of our classic runs from on the bubble to a 2nd weekend run. 2nd step on that rin was beating 3 seed Michigan State
Raleigh: Last Tourney Appearance- 2016 March Madness has visited the capital of North Carolina 16 times. 2021 will be the 4th time at PNC Arena.
Best game at PNC Arena: Round of 64 2014- the Mighty Duke Blue Devils fall to Mercer a team that no one had heard of before until this night. One of the more shocking upsets in recent round of 64 history.
Lexington: Last Tourney Appearance 2013- one of the more historic college basketball cities in the US. March Madness has been in Lexington 22 times. Rupp Arena is also the most veteran venue in the first weekend as 2021 will be the 13th time the home of the Wildcats.
Best game at Rupp Arena: 1985 NCAA National Championship: 8 seed Villanova defeats powerhouse 1 seed Georgetown. This Final Four also saw a Unprecedented 3 teams from the same conference (St.Johns was 3rd Big East Team). Nova’s upset is known as one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history
Wichita: Last Tourney Appearance: 2018 (first weekend) The city of Wichita has been a host of the tourney 9 times. Intrust Bank Arena will be 2nd time host in 2021. The state of Kansas has never hosted a Final Four.
Best game at Intrust Bank Arena: Only 6 games to choose from but Round of 32 2018- Michigan vs Houston. Michigan freshman Jordan Poole hits a buzzer beater to give the wolverines a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
Dallas: Last Tourney Appearance- 2018 (first weekend) The city of Dallas has been the host 14 times. The American Airlines Center has been host 3 times.
Best Game at American Airline Center: The famous Loyola Chicago 2018 run to the Final Four started in Dallas. Beating Miami (FL) and Tennessee started one of the most popular Cinderella teams in recent memory.
Boise: Last Tourney Appearance- 2018 (first weekend). Extramile Arena has the host of March Madness 9 times. In 2001, it was the site of the closest first-round day at a single host location ever, with the four games played on March 15 decided by a combined total of seven points. One was Hampton’s upset of #2 Iowa State — Hampton was only the fourth #15 seed to beat a #2 seed since the tournament expanded from 53 to 64 teams in 1985.
Best Game at Extramile Arena: Round of 32 1995: UCLA sneaks by Missouri with a Tyus Edney buzz beater to win by 1. UCLA would go on to win the programs 11th national championship
San Jose: Last Tourney Appearance- 2019 (first weekend). The SAP Center will be tied with the Honda Center in Anaheim with 8 appearances as the most common site in California once the 2021 tourney starts. It has been a first weekend site 3 times and a Regional Site 4 times. There only a handful of Arenas that the NCAA uses for both of the first two weekends of the tourney.
Best Game at SAP Center: Elite Eight March 24th 2007. A battle of blue bloods #1 Kansas vs. #2 UCLA with a classic battle. With a late push UCLA beats the Jayhawks and go to their 2nd Final Four where they lose to eventual champion Florida.
